Current/Previous/Beta Releases

There are currently two different branch of Batocera:

  • Stable: Most stable version, recommended for most users.
  • Butterfly: Most up to date version. Stability is usually not an issue, but particular things can often be broken in this version. Recommended for users who wish to test the new features and assist the development team in fixing bugs.

You can switch what branch you're on by going to : MAIN MENUUPDATES & DOWNLOADSUPDATE TYPE.

You can also do the same by editing the appropriate line in /userdata/system/batocera.conf/:

updates.type=butterfly

Upon reboot, you'll be able to update your Batocera to the latest version of the branch you've selected.

You can check the latest version available from the command line with:

batocera-check-updates
Installed: 40-dev-7a5b31b12e 2024/04/24 00:36
Webversion: 39 2024/03/04 10:11
Update URL: https://updates.batocera.org/x86_64/stable/last
Branch: STABLE-branch searched
Used arch: x86_64
Status: No Update found!

And if you want to check on the latest butterfly version, with its build date, you can type:

batocera-check-updates butterfly
Installed: 40-dev-7a5b31b12e 2024/04/24 00:36
Webversion: 40-dev-7a5b31b12e 2024/04/24 00:36
Update URL: https://updates.batocera.org/x86_64/butterfly/last
Branch: BUTTERFLY-branch searched
Used arch: x86_64
Status: No Update found!

To update to that checked version, use:

batocera-upgrade

If you ever want to upgrade to a specific version, or the current checker is broken for whatever reason, you can use batocera-upgrade [url of the build folder containing the version you want]. For example:

batocera-upgrade https://mirrors.o2switch.fr/batocera/x86_64/stable/last/

Alternatively, you can also upgrade manually.

You can see a short list of the most recently updated beta builds on this page!

Older releases are ordered by date. Builds that have betas generated on a regular basis are bolded. You can ask to have a beta build for another architecture on our Discord server.

If you see that a build is “missing”, it's most likely just sharing an image with another device. Hover your cursor over a device download link on the download page and check its build name, then match it up with the one on this page.

Sometimes the current build for a particular device will stay on an older version of Batocera, this might be due to severe bugs affecting only that build for that device that couldn't be resolved in time for the major release. These are usually released later on or fixed by the next version. Discontinued devices will simply stay at the version they were discontinued at.

Torrents are available but only the most popular platforms are updated. Always check the above list for the latest stable version. Here's a link to the torrents page.

You can use the internal upgrade URLs that Batocera uses instead. Just replace https://mirrors.o2switch.fr/batocera/ with https://updates.batocera.org/ . This server only has the current and beta releases, however.

Alternatively, you could check to see if any other users are currently seeding the image via the torrent magnet link.
